Discovering a love of Mexican cooking

Food has always been a pillar of my family, for my mom most of all. For her, it is a form of expression, and at 80 years old she still cooks. As a child growing up in Mexico, I watched traditional meals, like barbacoa, being prepared. It inspired me, and when I came to the United States cooking was a way to revisit the places we had left. In high school, I took a cooking class and learned technical skills that supplemented what I’d learned from my mother. If I don’t know how to make a certain food, I learn how to do it—whether it’s traditional Mexican fare or something experimental. You can, too, with the help of these resources.
